I'm a bit of a book learner - infact i've never done a course of any sort on gardening. If you too are a book learner i've got a list of books here to help you out.
Organic gardening in Australia
Peter Bennett
This book was my first foray into organic gardening. I bought it in Adelaide as a teenager with a voucher i got as an award at school. I still think it's a great starter book for a back yard gardener.
Peter has a definate voice in this book - such books are rarely written like this nowdays. You get to know Peter and his values, opinions and political views but what about the content?
Background chapters on soil, pests, composting, ecosystems are a good basis to understanding the basics of organic gardening. Following these are chapters on growing different vegetables which are really useful as he goes into the methods that he uses.
I still occasionally refer to this book for references about pests, farming, products and even methods.
